JOHNNY RAMONE NEARLY DIED… THEN THE RAMONES NAMED AN ALBUM AFTER HIS SURVIVAL

“Too Tough to Die” wasn’t just a great Ramones album title.

For Johnny Ramone, it was frighteningly close to the truth.

In 1983, Johnny got into a street fight in New York and was kicked in the head. His skull was fractured so badly that he required emergency brain surgery.

For a while, there were serious questions about whether he would even recover.

Three months later, Johnny Ramone was back onstage.

Then, on October 1, 1984, the Ramones released Too Tough to Die — an album whose title was inspired by Johnny’s near-fatal ordeal and remarkable recovery.

It also marked a tougher turn for the band, with Tommy Ramone returning as producer and the Ramones pushing back toward the harder sound of their early records.

But behind that title was something very real.

Johnny had been nearly killed.

Then he picked up his guitar and went back to work.

“Too Tough to Die”?

For Johnny Ramone, it wasn’t just an album title.
