what does independence really mean? — a montessori teacher's answer #july4th

independence isn't a holiday.
it's a button a four-year-old won't let me help with. it's a child pouring water and getting most of it in the cup. it's the seventeenth try at something that should have worked the first time. it's the moment a kid figures it out and doesn't even look up — because of course he did it.
the country we celebrate today was built by people who had to figure things out. we believe independence begins much earlier.
independence isn't built in a day. it's built one "I did it" at a time.
to the families at our campuses near the bases — and to the ones across the country who carry the cost of this holiday quietly — thank you.
