Rising above the Caucasus Mountains in southern Russia, Mount Elbrus is widely recognised as Europe's highest mountain and one of the legendary Seven Summits. Its western summit reaches 18,510 feet or 5,642 metres above sea level, while its eastern peak stands at 18,442 feet or 5,621 metres, the two summits separated by a high saddle nearly 17,390 feet or 5,300 metres above sea level.
Elbrus is not merely a mountain—it is a dormant stratovolcano. Small volcanic fumaroles still escape near the summit, reminding scientists that the volcano remains dormant rather than extinct. Its 22 glaciers feed rivers including the Kuban and shape much of the northern Caucasus.
The mountain has inspired explorers for centuries. The eastern summit was first climbed in 1829 by Khillar Khashirov, a Circassian guide accompanying a Russian scientific expedition. The higher western summit followed in 1874, reached by a British-led expedition under Florence Crauford Grove. Even its name is believed to derive from the ancient Avestan term Harā Bərəzaitī, meaning "high watchful mountain."
Elbrus is considered one of the more accessible Seven Summits, with cable cars and mountain huts in the Baksan Valley helping climbers reach higher camps. Yet appearances can be deceptive. Sudden whiteouts, violent storms, extreme cold and altitude sickness make Elbrus a serious mountaineering challenge, and fatal accidents still occur despite its relatively straightforward route. Careful acclimatisation, favourable weather and experienced guides are essential.
From its twin volcanic domes and sweeping glaciers to its centuries of exploration and enduring legends, Mount Elbrus is far more than Europe's highest peak. It stands as a remarkable meeting point of geology, history and human endurance at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.
