McKenzie breaks silence, insisting 'no political bias' in sports grant programme

Bridget McKenzie says she accepts her failure to declare membership to shooting club breached ministerial standards, but insists her membership caused no conflict of interest.

The Senator stood down from her Nationals leadership role and resigned from Cabinet on Sunday after an investigation from the head of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet found she breached ministerial standards.

However, the report cleared the government of overall wrongdoing by using a $100 million sports grants programme to target marginal seats ahead of the 2019 election.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Ms McKenzie said "there was no political bias in my decision making".

She went on to say it was an “immense honour” to serve as deputy leader and as the nation’s first female agriculture minister.
