Did Margaret Flynn really turn to stone?

After the wreck of the brig Amaranth on Mud Island in 1837, Margaret Flynn was buried near the site of the disaster. Decades later, local stories claimed that when her grave was opened, her body had become a solid stone-like mass.

Was it a rare natural phenomenon? A misunderstanding? Or simply a legend that grew over time?
