Otou Katayama and his wife Yumi lived together in Nara, Japan with their three children for over 20 years in complete silence. Not silence from distance. Not silence from separation. Silence under the same roof, at the same dinner table, in the same house. Otou communicated only through grunts and nods. Yumi kept trying to reach him. He kept not responding. The reason was not a dramatic argument or infidelity — Otou had grown jealous of his own children, believing Yumi gave all her attention to raising them and none to him. What started as resentment lasted two decades. They had a third child during those 20 years of silence.
Their children grew up never once hearing their parents have a conversation. When they became adults they contacted Hokkaido Television and asked for help. The show arranged for Otou and Yumi to meet at the park where they had their very first date — without telling either of them the other would be there. Their adult children watched from a distance as the meeting unfolded. After some hesitation Otou finally broke his silence. At the park of their first date he acknowledged his silence had hurt her — and thanked her for staying through all of it. She listened. Their children watched their parents speak to each other for the first time they could ever remember.
