If you've ever gotten sober and quietly realized it didn't fix the other stuff — the moods, the cravings, the part of your brain that wants more of anything that feels good — Sara Christine Berelsman gets it.

She's 14 years alcohol-free, she was diagnosed bipolar at 33, and last year she picked up a DUI with zero alcohol in her system after grabbing the wrong anxiety-med bottle and driving into a guardrail.

We get into the blackout $500 Sephora orders, the suicidal hangovers she kept having because being drunk felt too good to stop, the cornfield town where 95% of the moms wanted to sell her Pampered Chef and the other 5% were calling her 'crazy drunk mom,' and how writing about all of it became the thing that actually saved her. I also admitted the substance I missed most when I quit wasn't wine, it was Xanax, and that a bottle of 100 Vicodin used to last me about five days, so nobody here is judging. It's funny and it's serious, and it doesn't tie up in a bow.
