Inside a Svan Tower in Ushguli | Exploring Georgia’s UNESCO Towers

Ushguli in Georgia is already one of the most extraordinary places I have ever visited, but in this video I get to experience one of its most iconic landmarks from the inside.

Located high in the Caucasus Mountains in the UNESCO-listed region of Svaneti, Ushguli is famous for its historic Svan towers, the defensive stone towers that have defined this remote part of Georgia for centuries. During my visit, I get the rare opportunity to step inside one of these remarkable UNESCO towers and explore a piece of medieval mountain history up close.

In the video, I walk through the part of the Ushguli village, that is UNESCO certified, discover the atmosphere of this isolated mountain community, and learn more about the history of the Svan towers, why they were built, and how they helped families survive in one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Caucasus.

These towers are one of the symbols of Svaneti and one of the reasons Ushguli feels so unlike anywhere else in Europe. Combined with the village’s stone houses, mountain setting, and centuries of history, they make Ushguli one of the most fascinating destinations in Georgia.
