~ The fall of communism in the former Soviet Bloc was one of the biggest political collapses of the 20th century. For decades, countries like Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, and the Baltic states lived under Soviet-backed communist systems with censorship, secret police, shortages, controlled economies, and limited freedom. By the late 1980s, the system was exhausted. The economies were failing, people were tired of fear and restriction, and reform movements began spreading across Eastern Europe. In 1989, communist governments fell one after another, and in 1991 the Soviet Union itself collapsed.

Many of these countries developed strong relations with the United States because America represented the opposite of what they had just escaped: freedom, prosperity, private business, open speech, and national independence. For people who lived under Moscow’s control, the idea of America was not just Hollywood or money. It was a symbol of being able to speak freely, choose your leaders, build a life, travel, worship, own property, and not fear the state. That is why countries like Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Baltic states, and others often have a deep cultural respect for America. To many people in the former Soviet Bloc, America meant protection from Russia, opportunity, and the promise that life could finally belong to the individual again. ~
