Hatshepsut female pharaoh Thutmose III erasure Deir el-Bahri ancient Egypt. When Thutmose II died, his stepmother Hatshepsut became regent then claimed the full title of pharaoh. She ruled for over 20 years, expanding trade and building magnificent monuments, including her temple at Deir el-Bahri. After her death (~1458 BCE), Thutmose III became sole ruler and later ordered her images and cartouches damaged. Historians debate why. But despite the erasure, Hatshepsut is now recognized as one of Egypt’s most remarkable rulers. Power can shape the historical record but it cannot always control what future generations choose to remember.
