He's the most famous demigod in the world right now. But Moana only shows you the grin, the fishhook, and the tattoos that move. It never tells you how Māui died.

This is the real Māui of the Māori, of Aotearoa, New Zealand. One telling of a hero whose name is sung across the whole Pacific. A child born too soon and given to the sea, then breathed back to life on a far beach. The trickster who fished a whole island out of the ocean, snared the sun and beat it slow, and stole fire from the goddess who guarded it. And then the one thing even he could not outsmart: death itself, sleeping at the edge of the world. This is the part the movie leaves out.
