Fatherland is a documentary coming-of-age story set in the isolated wilderness of South Africa, where a group of young Afrikaner boys attend a nine-day training camp.
What is introduced as a structured programme focused on discipline, physical endurance, and teamwork slowly takes on a more complex tone. The boys participate in demanding exercises and shared experiences designed to build cohesion and resilience.
As the camp progresses, the environment becomes increasingly intense, pushing participants to confront ideas around identity, heritage, and their place in modern South Africa. Beneath the surface of routine training, deeper ideological influences begin to emerge, reshaping how the boys interpret authority, belonging, and cultural expectation.
The film examines adolescence under pressure, the formation of identity within group settings, and the subtle ways belief systems can shape young minds in controlled environments.
