Drinking alcohol is part of the larger African culture. People drink at weddings, circumcision ceremonies, funeral, graduation ceremonies, and at other social gatherings. Most Africans engage in drinking sprees, with many partaking locally brewed alcohol, which according to scientific analysis could be toxic.
However, being the biggest alcohol consumer in Africa has its downsides, that is why most governments in Africa are currently considering raising the drinking age to 21 in an effort to reduce the growing health problems (especially in newborns) associated with alcohol consumption. 10. Botswana — 8,46 liters per year
According to the world Health Organisation, Botswana is the 10 Alcohol consuming Country in Africa. This may be due to the high consumption of Botswana’s national beer, St Louis. Many opt for beer imports from nearby South Africa or Namibia instead. The majority of the alcohol consumed in Botswana is beer. The national beer, St. Louis, is incredibly cheap and highly consumed, though it’s pretty light and has a low alcohol percentage of 3.5% and 4.7%. 9. Gabon — 10,32 liters per year
The favored alcoholic drink of choice for Gabonese is clear. While 10% and 22% of alcohol consumption in Gabon comes from wine and spirits respectively, 68% comes from beer. The cheapest and most popular beer in Gabon is Regab, which cost about a dollar per bottle. In-fact Gabon is a dream nation for all alcohol lovers, because it has the cheapest priced alcoholic beverages in Africa and only second to the Russian Federation in the world. Contrary to Nigeria’s alcohol statistics, Gabon’s average alcohol consumption per capita has increased by almost 5 litres since 2005.
The Alcohol breakdown in Gabon is 68% from beer, 12% from wine, 20% from spirits, and less than 1% from other local brews. With a population of barely over 2 million people, Gabon is currently ranks as the 9th Alcohol consuming country in Africa.

While South Africa is the wine capital of the continent and is one of the biggest wine producers in the world, the majority of its alcohol consumption comes from beer. Beyond the popularity of beer brands like Castle and Black Label, South Africa is pretty evenly distributed in the other types of alcohol people consume.
Alcohol is a lot more expensive in south Africa than in Gabon, With a population of About 56 million people, the average alcohol consumption of South Africans per capita is about 11.46 litres per year. The most popular beer brands are Castle and Black Label, but the country’s extensive wine vineyards, particularly in Stellenbosch and the Western Cape, produce some of the world’s most popular wines as well.

Narrowly beating out South Africa, drinkers in Burundi overwhelmingly prefer 'other' drinks, which make up 81% of consumption. Beer, by comparison, makes up 19% of alcohol consumption and wine and spirits are barely consumed. The most famous drink in the Burundi is urwarwa or banana wine, produced in the traditional method and consumed most often during festivals and special occasions. Alcohol drinking in Burundi is almost like a tradition. Burundi has an extimated population of about 10.8 million people and the alcohol consumption in country per capita is about 11.23 litres per year.
