They Built Stone Furniture 5,000 Years Ago — Older Than the Pyramids

Skara Brae rebuilt: watch a Neolithic Orkney community build a stone village 5,000 years ago — older than the pyramids and Stonehenge — complete with built-in STONE furniture still standing today. With no metal and almost no timber, they dug round-cornered house hollows into a mound of their own midden, dry-laid double-skin flagstone walls packed with refuse for insulation, linked the homes with low covered passages against the North Atlantic gale, and fitted everything from stone: a central hearth, a shelved dresser, box-beds, and a watertight floor tank. Then they roofed it with whalebone, driftwood, and turf. This is how the oldest furnished homes in northern Europe rose.
