Balinese Arak perhaps has a bad reputation on the internet.
Arak is a Balinese liquor which is distilled from tuak, a sweet wine made from the coconut palm flower. Tuak is about 5% alcohol. Good arak can contain over 50%. Some arak is distilled from brem, which is a wine made from black glutinous rice and coconut milk.
Arak is actually Middle Eastern and an aniseed and Grape combination resulting in a white liquid.
Balinese Arak is actually 'Arrack' but the same sound somehow morphed into the misspelling of a completely different spirit.
Another similar-sounding word is 'Aragh', which in Armenia, Iran, Azerbaijan and Georgia is the colloquial name of Vodka, and again, not an aniseed-flavoured drink.
There are many horror stories on the internet about Arak.
