A tiny group of islands. A desperate military dictatorship. A British government thousands of miles away. And 74 days that changed modern warfare forever. In 1982, Argentina made a bold move that it believed Britain would not answer.

The Falkland Islands, long disputed and remote in the South Atlantic, suddenly became the center of a fierce war involving submarines, fighter jets, elite commandos, amphibious landings, and brutal mountain battles.

This video takes you through the dramatic story of the Falklands War — from the political pressure inside Argentina to the shocking invasion of Port Stanley, from the sinking of the General Belgrano to the deadly air attacks in “Bomb Alley,” and finally to the surrender that reshaped politics in both Britain and Argentina.

The conflict began when Argentina’s military junta, led by General Leopoldo Galtieri, tried to use nationalism to distract from economic crisis and public anger. The invasion of April 2, 1982, was meant to be fast, symbolic, and decisive. But it badly underestimated Britain’s response. Instead of backing down, Britain assembled a massive naval task force and sailed nearly 8,000 miles to retake the islands.

At sea, the war became one of the most intense naval conflicts of the modern age. HMS Conqueror’s sinking of the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano changed the balance of the war and forced Argentina’s surface fleet back to port. But the danger was far from over. Argentine aircraft launched daring low-level attacks against British ships, using bombs and Exocet missiles with devastating results. HMS Sheffield, HMS Coventry, HMS Ardent, HMS Antelope, and others became names etched into military history.

The skies over the South Atlantic became a deadly contest of technology, courage, and tactics. British Sea Harriers fought Argentine Mirages, Daggers, and Skyhawks in fast, dangerous engagements. The Harrier’s unique ability to vector its thrust gave it an advantage in close combat, while British missile systems and ship defenses were tested under real battlefield pressure.

Then came the landings at San Carlos Water. British troops came ashore under relentless air attack in a place soon nicknamed “Bomb Alley.” When the Atlantic Conveyor was sunk, Britain lost vital helicopters, forcing soldiers to march across freezing, waterlogged terrain with heavy packs. The famous “yomp” across the Falklands became one of the defining images of the campaign.

On land, the battles were harsh and exhausting. Goose Green, Mount Longdon, Two Sisters, Mount Harriet, Tumbledown Mountain, and Mount William became key stages in the advance toward Port Stanley. British paratroopers, Royal Marines, Guards, and Gurkhas fought through rough ground, freezing weather, and determined resistance.

By June 14, 1982, Argentine forces in Stanley were surrounded. General Mario Menéndez surrendered, ending the war after 74 days. Britain had retaken the Falkland Islands, the Argentine junta collapsed soon after, and Margaret Thatcher’s political position was dramatically strengthened.

But beyond politics, the Falklands War revealed something even bigger: modern war had changed. Missiles, submarines, aircraft, electronic systems, special forces, and logistics all proved decisive. A conflict over remote islands became a warning to every navy and military planner in the world.

This is the story of the Falklands War — a short, sharp, brutal conflict where distance, technology, courage, and miscalculation collided in the cold waters of the South Atlantic.
