The Byrds Perform “Mr. Tambourine Man” on The Ed Sullivan Show

The Byrds’ only Ed Sullivan Show appearance.

On December 12, 1965, 1991 Inductees The Byrds made their only appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, performing two of their most iconic recordings: a cover of Pete Seeger’s “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)” and this rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.”

Originally released on Dylan’s 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home, “Mr. Tambourine Man” took on a new life when The Byrds recorded their version for their 1965 debut album Mr. Tambourine Man.

Released as their first single for Columbia Records, the song became a worldwide breakthrough, reaching No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the U.K. Singles chart.

With its chiming 12-string guitar and blend of folk songwriting and rock instrumentation, The Byrds’ recording helped define and popularize the emerging folk rock and jangle pop sounds of the mid-1960s. Their interpretation even had an impact on Dylan himself, who was reportedly inspired in part by The Byrds’ electric version to explore electric instrumentation in his own work.
