In 1968, The Kinks released "Picture Book", one of the standout tracks from The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society. Written by Ray Davies, the song is pure Kinks nostalgia: looking through old family photographs and remembering a version of life that has disappeared. But underneath it sits an incredibly distinctive, bouncing riff that would suddenly sound very familiar more than 30 years later.
Fast-forward to 2000 and Green Day released "Warning".

Almost immediately, listeners noticed that its main riff bore a striking resemblance to "Picture Book". It isn't really accurate to call it simply a stolen bassline either: the similarity is in the central recurring riff and rhythmic feel that drives both songs.
The connection has become so well recognised that retrospective accounts of "Picture Book" specifically mention Green Day using its riff on "Warning".

The Kinks noticed too. Dave Davies has openly joked that Green Day "ripped off" the song, although the similarity never developed into one of rock's great courtroom battles. Instead, it became another example of just how far The Kinks' influence travelled. A riff written in late-60s England resurfaced in one of the biggest punk-rock bands in America three decades later, leaving fans with a pretty simple question: inspiration, coincidence... or did Green Day nick it?
