PINK FLOYD PUT A RANDOM COW ON AN ALBUM COVER… AND IT WENT TO NO. 1

Holy cow.

On October 2, 1970, Pink Floyd released Atom Heart Mother in the UK — the album that gave them their first UK No. 1.

And its cover became almost as strange as the music.

Pink Floyd wanted to move away from the psychedelic imagery and elaborate designs associated with the band.

So designer Storm Thorgerson went looking for something deliberately ordinary.

He drove into the countryside, found a field full of cows and photographed one.

No band name.
No album title.
No explanation.

Just a cow staring back at you.

And she wasn’t anonymous.

Her name was Lulubelle III.

She had absolutely no idea that her face was about to appear in record stores around the world and become one of the strangest album covers in rock history.

Atom Heart Mother went straight to No. 1 in the UK — Pink Floyd’s first chart-topping album there.

Years before The Dark Side of the Moon and its prism became one of music’s most recognizable images…

Pink Floyd conquered Britain with a cow.

Atom Heart Mother?

They milked the weirdness all the way to No. 1.
