My Dad traveled the world as a Chief Engineer on cargo ships (hence all my nautical themed songs!) When I was very young, I’d listen to him tell exotic stories of life on the high seas. On one voyage he brought me a beautiful drum made in Tanzania. He always talked about visits to African countries and he made sure that I knew world geography which is why the Serengeti held such a place in my memory as if it was my own. I woke up with the lyrics and a vague melody, and later at rehearsal Andy (Rubyfish drummer) delivered a hypnotic drum pattern with heavy toms – it was a spine-tingly moment. 

I spent months with my Dad (who was in physical discomfort) during his final months. He continually asked me to play this song on his cassette player, often over and over again. One day he told me that it was his favorite and that the recording’s soaring textures was uplifting and calming. Those words were a gift, a recognition for my craft in a way that I’d never received from him before.
