After the death of Valdemar Atterdag in 1375, his daughter Margaret I of Denmark rose to power and achieved something extraordinary. She became ruler of Denmark and Norway, a kingdom that included the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and parts of Greenland.

Then, in 1397, Margaret united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden (including Finland) into the powerful Kalmar Union. The historic treaty was signed in the Swedish city of Kalmar, creating one of the most influential political unions in medieval Europe.
