The Margaret Bridge (Margit híd) is the second-oldest and second-largest bridge in Budapest, connecting Buda and Pest across the Danube River. Its history is defined by unique engineering, wartime destruction, and eventual restoration:
Design and Construction: The bridge was designed by the French engineer Ernest Goüin and constructed between 1872 and 1876. A distinctive feature of the bridge is its angled shape; it bends at a 165-degree angle in the middle to connect to Margaret Island, which was not part of the original design but added during construction.
Wartime Destruction: During World War II, the bridge suffered a catastrophic fate. On November 4, 1944, a premature explosion of German explosives—originally intended to sabotage the bridge—partially destroyed the Pest-side span, killing hundreds of civilians and soldiers. In January 1945, the remaining spans were blown up by retreating German forces, leaving only the piers standing.
Reconstruction: Post-war reconstruction began shortly after the conflict, and the bridge was reopened to traffic in 1948.
Modernization: A comprehensive renovation of the Margaret Bridge was completed between 2009 and 2011 to restore its original aesthetic while modernizing the structure for contemporary traffic requirements.
