One sister was hauled west and became the most famous mother in American children's literature. The other stayed in the Big Woods, raised fourteen children through a forty-five-year widowhood, and quietly handed Laura Ingalls Wilder the sugaring-off parties, the sleigh rides, and the lamplit memories that became Little House in the Big Woods. This is the full, true Little House on the Prairie story that the books and the television show left out.
