Elizabeth, a mother of four with “traditional family values”, thinks feminism is responsible for fewer women having children.

“The feminist movement’s just putting too much pressure on girls … and they’re putting having children back later … ”, which Elizabeth believes is increasing the likelihood of experiencing fertility issues.

Tanya, who is happily child-free, thinks there is more nuance to why more women are choosing to be child-free.

“I always knew from a very young age that I didn’t want to have children. It was an innate thing within me. I was too young to even know what the feminist movement even was.”

She believes women shouldn’t be judged for their decision to have children or not.

Fewer Australians are having children, with the total fertility rate expected to fall to a record low this year, according to the 2025 Centre of Population statement on population.
