Belfast was hit by another night of violence after protests over a knife attack spiralled into chaos, with homes, cars and a bus set alight and families forced to run for safety. One family had to be rescued from a burning house, while politicians branded the scenes outright thuggery and warned that innocent people were being targeted. Police and firefighters were stretched across dozens of incidents as unrest spread beyond Belfast to other parts of Northern Ireland. The disorder has deepened fears that anger over the original attack is now being twisted into something far more dangerous.
