Harry and Meghan welcome the UK government’s move towards protecting children online

The UK Government announced new measures this week to better protect children online. And Harry and Meghan released a statement in response that does something most political commentary on this issue does not do. It welcomes the progress and refuses to pretend it is sufficient in the same breath.
The statement references The Lost Screen Memorial, the initiative they supported in Geneva during Meghan's WHO appearance earlier this year. The memorial exists to give human faces and real stories to a policy debate that too often gets lost in abstraction. Behind every discussion about regulation and platform accountability are families whose children are gone. Parents who have sat in front of screens trying to understand what happened and why the companies that built the systems that caused the harm are still operating without meaningful consequence.
Harry and Meghan said the measures may help reduce harm but do not fix the problem at its source. They named what fixing it actually requires. Safer platforms by design. Meaningful accountability. A genuine commitment to placing children's wellbeing ahead of engagement and profit.
That last phrase is the one that matters most and the one that will generate the most resistance. Engagement and profit are the architectural foundation of every major social media platform. The recommendation algorithms, the infinite scroll, the notification systems, the dopamine loops built into the product design, all of it exists to maximise the time users spend on the platform and the revenue that time generates. Children are users. Their attention is monetised. The harm that results from that monetisation is currently treated as an externality rather than a design failure.
Harry and Meghan are saying it is a design failure. That the burden cannot rest solely on parents and children to navigate systems that billion dollar companies built to be as compelling as possible to the most vulnerable users.
This is not a new argument. Advocates, researchers, bereaved parents and child safety organisations have been making it for years. What is different when Harry and Meghan make it is the reach and the specific weight of their platform history. They were inside an institution that was itself damaged by unchecked media practices. They have spoken publicly about the mental health consequences of sustained hostile coverage. They founded Archewell partly in response to understanding how information environments cause measurable harm to real people.
They are not commenting on this issue from a distance. They have skin in it.
The statement ends with a line that is both diplomatic and pointed. Stronger protections are better than inaction and today's announcement is a welcome step forward. Welcome but insufficient. Better than nothing but nowhere near enough. The companies still need to be held accountable. Every day without meaningful change is another day children remain exposed to preventable harm.
The UK Government has taken a step. Harry and Meghan have told them clearly and publicly that a step is not a destination.
That is what principled advocacy sounds like when it is done well. You acknowledge what has been achieved. You name what remains undone. You keep the pressure on without dismissing the progress.
The Lost Screen Memorial exists because children died. The statement exists because the work is not finished.
