Children of Production LA - Beginner Warm-ups

Hi, I’m Ian Brown, lead drum instructor of Children of Production LA and today we're going to do a few warm ups. So the first exercise we're going to work on it is called 8-8-16. It's kind of a staple in the high school and other marching band units. It is a simple 8 on your right hand 8 on your left hand 16 on your right hand. Then we start 8 on the left 8 on the right and end with 16 on the left.

So what we do at Children of Production LA is we have three different sets of stick Heights. We have a level one, which is anywhere from two to three inches off the drum more of an inner beat distance from the head then we have a level two, which is a comfortable stick height just something where if you're playing on a pad or a pillow at home, it's just a comfortable volume. Then, a level three is a full extension. Right hand 90° facing straight-up left hand not so much but still a higher extension than a level 2 at a comfortable volume. So we're going to do  8-8-16 at all three levels. Level one being inner beat about 3in, level two comfortable playing position and level 3 at full volume or full extension.

Ok, 8-8-16 level one.

8-8-16 level 3 full extension.

All right. So that was 8-8-16 warm up doing level 1 level 2 and level 3 that's usually our beginner practice warm-up of the day something to just loosen up the hands work on your inner beat to try to stay as quiet as you can and level 3 to be able to stretch the muscles in your arm. You want to keep in mind in any of these exercises that the hand that is not playing you want that stick to be as low to the snare as possible, at about a level one. So whatever the hand that’s accenting  or playing the higher notes is, you still want to make sure that stick goes right there. Right in the comfort zone at about 3 inches off of the snare.
