Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" in 1960 — and the Shirelles' lead singer Shirley Owens didn't want to sing it. She thought it was "too country," too soft, too pop for the group. Producer Luther Dixon talked her into it, Carole King wrote the string arrangement herself, and the song Shirley almost refused became the first #1 hit by a Black girl group in American history.
The song she didn't want is the reason we remember her name.
