About this video:

In this video, we build the lead used in Avicii's song with Aloe Blacc called "SOS.

Sound design is simply one of the most overthought tasks of music production. The biggest problem with the idea of sound design is that most amateur producers think they HAVE to learn it to be considered a good producer, or a "real" producer.

This couldn't be farther from the truth. "Sound design" is simply the act of using resources available to you to produce a sound. This doesn't mean you HAVE to create a sound from scratch...

If you want to create a sound from scratch, that is totally fine. If you want to use presets to skip making the sound from scratch, that is also fine. If you want to pay someone to make your sounds for you while you concentrate on more important things like composition, songwriting, and engineering, go for it!

Sound designing presets from scratch is a HUGE job. This is why people earn great livings as sound designers by building and selling preset packs and industry-dominating sound banks like Nexus or Omnisphere.

Presets exist so you don't have to go through the pain and spend the extra time of creating sounds by yourself. This is something Avicii was so damn amazing at. He would fly through is production process while using ONLY presets so that he could concentrate on the main job of a producer which is: finish good songs quickly. Watch any of his studio vids. He did not produce one single sound from scratch in any of his hit songs.

As a producer, you MUST know how to finish good songs quickly. Don't hold yourself up on unneeded tasks like sound designing everything from scratch. None of the biggest artists and DJ's do this. Focus on workflow, and anything you have to do finish your next song quickly and effectively.

Avicii understood that his job was to finish songs quickly and not get hung up on something as difficult as sound design.

You only start each day with a limited amount of creative energy, so use it wisely and don't spend it on things that don't matter.
