“Anarchy in the U.K.” vs “We Will Rock You” — 1977 ⚡

1977. Two completely different visions of rock were colliding in Britain.

Punk was exploding.
The Clash. The Damned. The Sex Pistols.

And while a new generation was tearing up the rules, Freddie Mercury was asked whether punk rock was a challenge to Queen.

His answer?
“It’s always been a challenge.”
“The competition is always there.”

On one side, the Sex Pistols had “Anarchy in the U.K.” — raw, confrontational and everything punk was becoming.

On the other, Queen were preparing something completely different.
On October 28, 1977, Queen released News of the World.

It opened with:
“We Will Rock You.”
“We Are the Champions.”
Two songs that would become two of rock’s most recognizable anthems.

And there was another connection between these two worlds: News of the World also included Roger Taylor’s aggressive “Sheer Heart Attack,” carrying an unmistakable punk energy of its own.

Anarchy and anthem.
Punk and Queen.

Two very different ideas of what rock could be — colliding in one extraordinary era.
