At first glance, it looks like the statue is actively watching the camera move around it. As the perspective shifts, the eyes, brow, and facial features seem to rotate and maintain eye contact no matter where the viewer stands.

The effect comes from a fascinating visual phenomenon known as the hollow face illusion. Instead of protruding outward like a normal face, the features are carved inward as a concave recess. Your brain automatically interprets the face as sticking outward, creating a powerful mismatch between reality and perception.

The sculpture depicts Saint George and was created in the distinctive geometric style of Catalan artist Josep Maria Subirachs. The deep recesses, sharp angles, and dramatic shadows make the illusion especially convincing, causing a completely stationary stone face to appear almost alive.
