Description

William III Dog Nose Spoon created by Thomas Allen of London in 1698
A beautiful dog nose spoon created during the reign of William III (1694 - 1702).  Late 17th Century transitional silver spoon:  the bowl has been
elongated
and has the introduction of the
dog nose
at the handle's tip, all which will become popular
features
of spoon in the early 18th century.  However,
the
stem and handle are flat (no rounding of the edges) and the dog nose shape has the middle tip turned up, all features of the
previous
spoon style, the trefid spoon.  And of course, the
pronounced
drop flowing into a rat tail under the bowl remained
constant
between the two styles of spoons.
On reverse handle is engraved the
monograms
RMF.
Dimensions:  L  7-3/4" Weight: 1.8 Oz.
In very nice condition.
Thomas Allen apprenticed to John King September 1668 and freed October 1675.  It is presumed that he went to work for someone else, being that his mark was not entered into record until 1697.  (Grimwade, pg 422-23)
The hallmarks are as follows:
AL - markers mark of Thomas Allen, registered in 1697
www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Makers/
London-AK-AQ.html#AL
Britannia - mark that the silver content is 95.833%
Lions Head Erased - town mark for London
Gothic C - date mark for 1698
Great Opportunity to add a William III silver spoon, which bridges the late 17th century and early 18th century spoon styles, to your collection.
