Among the major foreign witnesses of the Armenian Genocide, Henry Morgenthau, the ambassador from the United States, is of considerable significance. Successful in business, Morgenthau had made a mid-career switch to government service. He decided at the age of 50 that he had achieved financial security. Impressed with Woodrow Wilson, he supported his presidential campaign and became one of its largest contributors. He hoped that if elected, Wilson would reward him with a cabinet office, if possible at the US Treasury. But his reward was being offered the embassy at Constantinople, one not considered of vital importance by the establishment. A U.S. ambassador in Turkey had little to do but look after the interests of US insurance companies, which were especially active in Turkey offering life insurance policies to mostly rich Armenians and Greeks in major cities, most of them perishing in genocide later and not seeing any payback at all.
Henry Morgenthau was US Ambassador to Turkey from 1913 to 1916, this book covers the Armenian genocide. Comprehensive work on Armenian history and genocide, with 29 chapters and 55 photographs. In 1914 he witnessed the Ottoman entry into WW I and the genocide of the empire's Armenian population. His Story was an indictment against the Ottoman leaders for their entry into the world conflict and the mass murder of over a 1.5 million Armenians. His account was written with the authority of a first-hand observer and remains one of the classic accounts of Armenian Genocide. The Near East Relief committee was formed by a group of prominent Americans in response to Ambassador Morgenthau's reports on the treatment of the Armenians and other minorities in the Ottoman Empire. In 1922-23 Near East Relief evacuated 22,000 children from orphanages in interior Turkey to Syria and Greece.
