Description
A handmade large size rich mahogany cheese trencher, coaster, or cradle. This graceful serving piece was made in Georgian or Regency England. Notice the features: 2 sections for cheese rounds of different widths; rounded edges; 4 circular end disks; and rich aged wood patina. The trencher sits on a rectangle platform which makes it quite secure."Cheese was eaten daily in large wealthy households and the cheese coaster or cradle would have been a necessity. They were crescent-shaped, sometimes with a division and were made in a variety of materials, although often in mahogany. They had either four brass castors to the base, sometimes covered with leather, or were flat with the base covered with baize. These coasters would hold half a stilton cheese or similar, standing up on end thereby making it easier to cut and some cut bread and would be rolled up and down the centre of the long dining room tables. In the same way, decanters in coasters would also be rolled up and down." Ruby Lane
