ENGLISH SILVER PLATE REPOUSSE & ENGRAVED GLASS WINE DECANTERMADE BY ELKINGTON & Co. 1875
Pleased to offer this fine example of a English wine decanter in a rarely seen silver plate. This familiar style of a Bacchus & Maiden repousse form with a lion rampant atop a shield, is usually seen made in sterling silver beginning at over a ,000.
The decanter stands 12 inches tall and 7 inches wide from handle to spout. The plate repousse work displays two maiden heads amidst a raised grape & vine background. The spout is carved into the head of Bacchus. The circular top displays the same grape & vine pattern culminating into a lion rampant holding a heraldic shield engraved with the letter "B". Both the handle and thumb rest bear a leaf & berry engraving. The handle terminal collar displays a simple beading. The glass decanter also bears beautifully engraved grape & leaf pattern throughout.
Some reputable English makers that worked in both sterling and plate also used makers marks to identify their work as well as date letters. The collar marked with Elkington silverplate mark of E & Co within a shield followed by the marks E & Co each within a rectangle, and a date letter of "O" for 1875.
A simply gorgeous example of a Victorian English silver plate wine decanter.
