Description
Welcome toAntiques & Moore!
This listing is for a gorgeous Georgian Sterling Silver berry spoon, c. 1809.
This lovely spoon has an elaborate engraved design on handle front with cartouche for monogram (unused) and a deeply chased unusual design with birds and flowers on the gold washed bowl. The spoon has a scalloped/pleated outer edge which with the decoration was added at a later date to appeal to Victorian taste. The silver is marked with English hallmarks for London, Sterling and date letter for 1809 although there is no maker's mark. This spoon is the most unusual berry spoon I have seen in over 40 years in the antiques business.
Measure 8 1/2" long. Weighs 50 grams.
This nice spoon is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws.
History: Berry spoons are a type of spoon that have a chased decoration of berries or fruits on the interior of the bowl. Silver berry spoons that have marks dating prior to the mid-19th Century originated as plain serving spoons with the "berry" decoration added later. This practice started in the Mid-19th Century to adapt earlier silver spoons to the elaborate tastes of the prosperous Victorian owner. Although today we categorize all spoons with the berry and fruit decoration as "berry" spoons, Georgian berry spoons didn't exist and these spoons should be more accurately described as a "Georgian spoon in Old English pattern with later decoration".
